Minister Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng (© Samuel Moore) The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Accra organised on Tuesday 3rd October, 2017 a reception at the Ambassador’s residence to celebrate the 27th anniversary of the German reunification.  Ambassador Christoph Retzlaff welcomed H.E. Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Honourable Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the Honourable Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta, members of parliament, members of the diplomatic corps and counterparts of the different sections of the German Embassy at the event.

In his speech Ambassador Retzlaff stated that 3rd October is a very special day for all Germans. By recalling the spirit of optimism and freedom, which led to the pull down of the iron curtain 27 years ago, he emphasized the importance of the celebration and noted that this can be a source of inspiration at a time where, nationalism and populism seem to be gaining ground in many parts of the world. German Embassy Accra celebrates 27th anniversary of the Day of German Unity Enlarge image Some guests at the reception (© Samuel Moore) He also praised the 60 years of German-Ghanaian partnership and highlighted the successful visit of H.E. the President of the Republic of Ghana to Berlin in June 2017, where the G 20 Partnership with Africa was launched.

The fact that the trade volume between the Ghana and Germany went up by 20% in 2016 is a positive sign for the economic relationship between our two countries, Ambassador Retzlaff said. German companies are interested in starting business with Ghana. The G20 Partnership with Africa and the new Reform Partnership between Ghana and Germany are promising initiatives to bring more private investment to Ghana.

The expansion of vocational training programs, the introduction of the “Enpact” Initiative to support Ghanaian start-ups and young entrepreneurs and the DAAD student exchange program, which is awarding more than 400 scholarships to Ghanaians to study in Germany every year, demonstrate the dynamism of our cooperation in the educational sector.

Ambassador Retzlaff stated that both countries are working hard to make their cooperation even better, especially for the young people in Ghana, to create opportunities for them, give them perspectives, and empower them to build the successful Ghana of the future.

Ambassador Retzlaff also announced that soon the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will visit Ghana.

In his reply speech the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Honourable Kwabena-Frimpong-Boateng acknowledged the invaluable support of Germany to Ghana through its numerous projects and institutions and added that the Government of Ghana is working hard to move the country’s economy beyond the usual dependency on aid to trade through various policy interventions.

The minister also expressed appreciation for the scheduled visit of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany “Such high level visit is an expression of confidence in our country and also attests to the growth of the warm bonds of friendship that happily exist between our two countries and peoples.”, he stated

His Excellency the Ambassador and the Honourable Minister shared a toast to the well-being of their countries and to a successful friendship and cooperation between Ghana and Germany. The Ghanaian, German and international guests welcomed the occasion to come together in the friendly atmosphere of the residency’s garden, tasting some original German sausages and beer, whereas the Ghanaian Band Patchbay treated the guests to an evening of fine Ghanaian highlife music.
