Visa Requirements

Here you may find all the necessary information you need for applying for a visa along with application forms for a short-stay visit (Schengen visa, up to 90 days) or a long-stay visit/permanent stay (residence permit).

The German Embassy in Accra serves

- applicants from GHANA or other Nationals residing in Ghana

- applicants from LIBERIA or other Nationals residing in Liberia

- applicants from SIERRA LEONE or other Nationals residing in Sierra Leone

to travel to Germany.

The German Embassy also issues Schengen visa on behalf of ESTONIA for applicants from Ghana or residents in Ghana ONLY.

Please note, the fee for Schengen visa as well as residence permits is 60 Euros. All fees are to be paid in Ghana Cedis according to the exchange rate fixed by the Embassy. All children under 6 years as well as spouses and children of all ages of EU Nationals apply free-of-charge.

Visa Applicants from Liberia

The German Embassy in Accra serves applicants from Liberia and other nationals residing in Liberia as the German Embassy in Monrovia is not in a position to offer any consular services.

Please note, all applicants, regardless of their position in the Liberian Government, Administration or society must apply in person at the German Embassy in Accra. Return of passports by courier service may be arranged through the Visa Reception Centre. Please contact the Visa Reception Centre directly to enquire about arrangements and fees.

As far as requirements are concerned, please find below some information for Liberian applicants. Please be advised, that at this moment, no travel insurance agency from Liberia is accredited. Therefore, it is mandatory to arrange your travel insurance either through your German host or through a Ghanaian insurance company.

Visa Applicants from Sierra Leone

The German Embassy in Accra serves applicants from Sierra Leone and other nationals residing in Sierra Leone as the German Embassy in Freetown is not in a position to offer any consular services.

Please note, all applicants, regardless of their position in the Sierra Leonean Government, Administration or society must apply in person at the German Embassy in Accra. Return of passports by courier service may be arranged through the Visa Reception Centre. Please contact the Visa reception Centre directly to enquire about arrangements and fees.

As far as requirements are concerned, please find below instructions for Sierra Leonean applicants. Please be advised, that at this moment, no travel insurance agency from Sierra Leone is accredited. Therefore, it is mandatory to arrange your travel insurance either through your German host or through a Ghanaian insurance company.

Schengen Visa on behalf of Estonia

As of May 1st, 2008, the German Embassy in Accra issues Schengen Visa on behalf of Estonia. GHANAIANS as well as residents of third countries in GHANA whishing to travel to Estonia for visit or business not exceeding 90 days should call on the Visa Reception Centre for an appointment and apply at the German Embassy’s visa section. Kindly note that the Embassy is in accordance with Schengen rules only in a position to issue visa on behalf of Estonia. Should the German Embassy not be in a position to issue a visa, the applicant may wish to apply at the Estonian Embassy in London directly. For enquiries on visa requirements, kindly follow the rules and regulations for traveling to Germany. All documents from Estonia must be translated to English or German. Appeals and complaints have to be directed to the Estonian Embassy in London and will neither be answered nor forwarded by the German Embassy in Accra. Visa applications for any other purposes (employment, study, family reunion, long stay exceeding 90 days etc.) are handled by the Estonian Embassy in London directly.

Holders of Ghanaian Diplomatic or Service Passports

Holders of Ghanaian Diplomatic or Service Passports do not need a visa to travel to Germany for a short term visit of up to 90 days. Please be prepared to provide proof of travel insurance upon entering Germany.

As this exemption is based on a bilateral agreement, you are kindly requested to check possible visa requirements for transit through third countries and/or onward destinations.

Holders of UN Laissez-passer Travel Documents

Holders of UN Laissez-passer Travel Documents, regardless of their nationality, on official duty only, do not need a visa to travel to Germany for a short term visit of up to 90 days. Please be prepared to provide proof of your official mission as well as your nationality (national passport) upon entering Germany. You are also expected to provide proof of travel insurance upon entering Germany.

Holders of UN Laissez-passer Travel Documents intending to enter Germany for a private visit, must apply for a visa with their national passport. You are kindly advised to follow the general rules and requirements provided by the German Embassy in Accra.

Important Information for applying to join your Spouse in Germany for Family Reunion

Due to amendments in the German Immigraton Act, as of August 28, 2007, applicants applying for Family Reunion Visas to join their spouses in Germany need to provide the language aptitude test (A1 Goethe-Institut) proving basic knowledge of the German language. The certificate may be obtained from any Goethe-Institut branch only. Language courses leading to this certificate as well as testing to obtain the certificate are offered by the Goethe-Institut in Accra.
